Sanliurfa is a large city with more than 800 000 inhabitants in southeastern Turkey. In Turkey it is often called Urfa, as “Sanli” (meaning glorious) was added as recently as the 1980s.
For many Muslims it is a pilgrimage town as Abraham is said to have been born here (not in Ur in today’s Iraq).
It is a nice town to visit with its pleasant parks with old pools of water (Gölbasi), the old bazaar, mosques and citadel. And near to Sanliurfa is the village Harran with its beehive houses of mud. |

LoriPori Mon Dec 15, 2008 11:49 UTC Nice little page on Sanliurfa. The fishponds of Golbashi must look refreshing in the July heat. Like the pic of you and the huge stone head. | Bwana_Brown Sat Feb 23, 2008 18:34 UTC The Sanliurfa area sounds very interesting, especially your day-trip to Nemrut Dagi !! I think I would have enjoyed those huge fallen sculptured heads and Ataturk Dam too! | DanielF Tue Dec 18, 2007 18:35 UTC Excellent info. We will visit Urfa soon and use your tips. | wcph Tue Aug 2, 2005 00:58 UTC Nice page, I like that photo of Nemrut Dagi. :-) |
