Saida, or Sidon, is a large town 45 km south of Beirut. It is said to have been inhabited for at least 6000 years. It is mentioned in the bible and was an important Phoenician city. Sidon was a trading center and got wealthy on the trade of murex, a mollusc that produces purple dye. Buses from Beirut stops at Sahet en-Nejmeh, a square in the modern part of town. Towards the sea is the old part with the Sea Castle, the souqs with its labyrinthes of narrow streets and the soap museum.
