Kish is a 90 square kilometre big island in the Persian Gulf, about 17 km from the shores of mainland Iran. It is a very flat island and the highest region is only 45 metres above sea level. ´The population on the island is 20 000, but it is increasing as many people from mainland Iran comes here to work. The climate is very hot and humid, especially in summer (it?s more pleasant other times of the year).

What makes Kish attractive for visitors are the clear and warm water and nice coral beaches. And Kish is a trade free zone, with many shopping centres and low prices. On the island are many expensive resort hotels, and more are being built. Every year about 1,5 million people are visiting Kish. Many Iranians who can afford it comes here on holiday and many workers from Dubai comes to Kish to be able to renew their visa for Dubai. To visit Kish foreigners don?t need a visa for the first 14 days.

Kish has a long history and was first mentioned (by the name Araracta/Arakata) by a Greek sailor, Nearchus, in his memories from 325 BC. In the 12th century Kish was an Arab port famous for its pearls. In the 1960s the Shah of Iran turned the island into a luxury resort and after the Islamic revolution it has become a duty free shopping paradise.

I like that they have a beach for women only, on my travels I have seen Muslim women having to sunbathe and swim in the ocean fully dressed.

Yes, I liked that too. I would not have liked being fully dressed when swimming in the sea, and I always need some sun.

Those big shopping centers look incongruous on such a bleak desert island. What I found very interesting to read about was the old water reservoir near Harireh with its wind towers and domes that circulated the air to cool the fresh water that was stored inside. So it was possible to cool things before the invention of air conditioning and refrigeration.

Thank you Don! Those wind towers can also be found on many old palaces around Iran.

A beach for women only - I like it! And that is one fancy building for a water reservoir. Also thanks for visiting my Santorini - and yes it was an amazing spot for a VT Meet.

I had heard of Kish, but knew nothing about it - thanks for enlightening me. Excellent page! :-) Loved the idea of the women only beach so that women could get a bit of sun on their bodies. :-)

Would love to diving at Kish. 30,000 sounds expensive for icecream. Women only beach - that will be a great place to visit :) Cheers, SL

You are so brave to travel alone. Your ordeal about the passport, boat ticket was frightening. The beach for women only and no photos is also fascinating. I would be "put off" by so many restructions. Great information.
