Las Peñitas Travel Guide: 13 reviews and 156 photos

Las Peñitas is situated on the Nicaraguan Pacific coast near Poneloya, about 20 km west of León. It is a small fishing village with a relaxed atmosphere. When I visited, in the middle of the week, the long sandy beach was almost empty. There are a few hotels and restaurants in Las Peñitas, and even an Internet café.

Some tourists come here only on a daytrip from León but I think it was well worth it to stay a few days, to walk on the beach, swim and lay in the hammock reading a good book.

Other things you can do in Las Peñitas are taking a boat tour to Reserva Isla Juan Venado, horseback riding and surfing. The waves are great for surfing, but at some places there are hidden rocks under the surface. And if you swim you should be careful with the undertow, which can be strong. On the beach you can go looking for beautiful shells.

Right now I would love to sit at Barca de Oro and have one of their tasty meals instead of sitting in misty Switzerland. Jacqueline

It's great if you can find an accommodation by the sea. I love listening to the waves at night! Camarones al coco... oh, yummy!! Very nice sunset shots, Malena!

Don's right about the great way to start the day, and what better way to end it than enjoying the sunset with a drink in your hand!

Your Reserva Natural Isla Juan Venado boat trip looks and sounds very interesting! I enjoyed a similar one at Crooked Tree, Belize a few years ago. It's not often you can't put up with an Accoms - but your 2nd spot looks great! I love the way you travel.
