"Cascada San Rafael" San Rafael by MalenaN

San Rafael Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 100 photos

Cascada San Rafael is the highest waterfall in Ecuador. It is situated only a few kilometers from the Quito - Lago Agrio road, so it is quite easy to visit. The short trail to the viewpoints makes a pleasant walk and it is surrounded by lush green vegetation.

You can easily visit on a daytrip from Baeza, which is 1.5 hours away by bus. You can also do as I did, stay the night at Hostería Reventador a few kilometers away from the waterfall, or only stop for a couple of hours on your way to Lago Agrio. If you come by bus and have a lot of luggage you might want to go to Hostería Reventador first to leave your luggage there (for a fee) while visiting the waterfall.

Yes, it was an impressive sight (even though it is not like Niagara Falls).

What a wonderful waterfall, and what great scenery too! A very different Ecuadorean landscape from any that we saw :-) And such a cute little monkey!!

Ecuador has so many beautiful sceneries to offer in the Galapagos, along the coast, in the mountains and in the oriente. It is such a big variety in a small country!

Yes, we were really surprised how varied it is, given its size!

A fantastic looking waterfall. I hope they don?t wreck it by building that new dam and power plant. Fine photos in your tips and travelogues!

Hope the hydraulic dam won't affect the flow of this beautiful waterfall... It's great you could enjoy it being alone!

More than that, I've noticed you are the only one on VT who told us about this nature miracle in Ecuador!
