There are many places in Bogotá were you can eat a yummy and fresh fruit salad. One place is on Carrera 4, near Avenida Jiménez and not too far from Platypus. The good thing is that this place opens up early in the morning and you can have fruit salad for breakfast, already at 7 - 7.30. A big fruit salad was 3400 pesos (August 2700).

On Calle 11 beside the cathedral there are some nice cafés. The one I visited twice were new and they had no name jet, but it is the one beside La Puerta Falsa. I came here for the fruit salad. The first time I was disappointed because, as in many other places in Colombia, they put a sweet yoghurt sauce on top and cheese. The fruits were just the ones I liked (papaya, melon, kiwi, strawberry, apple and banana) so another day I went back and this time I asked to have the fruit salad natural, without other things. The fruit salad was 4000 pesos (August 2007). A strawberry juice with milk was 2500 pesos. At the café they also serve pastry, snacks and light lunch.

Crepes and Waffles

There are several Crepes and Waffles in Bogotá, but I just visited the restaurant on Avenida Jiménez. I returned several times as I’m a big fan of their big yummy ice creams. The disadvantage with the restaurant on Avenida Jiménez is that if you want to order from the menus you have to sit downstairs and there there are no windows. There are two menus, one for the food like crepes, salads and soups and another menu for the sweet crepes and the big ice creams. On the entrance floor you can buy the more simple ice creams and drinks. The crepes are good and there are many to choose from. I had a crepe with chicken asparagus and mushrooms. With Coke and tip it was 16 900 pesos. Both times I had big ice creams with whipped cream, meringue, sauce and strawberries or nuts I paid 7000 pesos (tip is already included on the recite). A smaller ice cream with three flavours was 3200 pesos (August 2007). Crepes and Waffles opens at noon.

Restaurant Name: Fast Food chains
In the corner of Avenida Jiménez and Carrera 7 there is a McDonald’s restaurant. From the tables on the second floor you have a good view over what is happening on the street below. I had spent some time around the Parque Santander and was becoming really hungry. As I knew McDonald’s was situated nearby it seemed like a better option than to search for another restaurant. It is like most McDonald’s and a Big Mac menu cost 9500 pesos (August 2007). The restaurant is open between 7 - 20.30.

Walking back to Casa Platypus after visiting Montserrat I was hungry so I looked for a place to eat. It was still quite early for lunch, but I looked for a place which had comida corriente (a set lunch menu). I passed Madrigal Restaurante and there were already a few lunch guests there so I decided that would be a good place. There was a soup and a juice and on the main plate there was chicken, rice, a potatoe and salad (the chicken could be changed for vegetables). The portions where quite small. The lunch was 5000 pesos (July 2008).

Down the road from Platypus and Sue Hostel is a café selling fruit salads, fresh fruit juices (with water or milk) and sandwiches. I came here just before closing time once and at that time I could not get a fruit salad, but I bought a strawberry juice (with milk) and a sandwich with cheese, jam and tomatoes to take away. It was 7100 pesos (July 2008).
