Aurangabad is a city with about 1 million inhabitants in the north part of Maharashtra. It is a dusty city with lots of traffic, but it is anyway a good base for exploring the caves in Ajanta and Ellora and the fort in Daulatabad.

Daulatabad was founded in 1610 and the city got its name from the Moghal Emperor Aurangazeb who made it his capital in 1653. Aurangabad is supposed to mean Built by the throne. But in 1763 the capital was moved to Hyderabad and the glory of Aurangabad was diminished significantly.

It is easy to reach Aurangabad. There is an airport and a railway station ( I left by plane and arrived by train from Mumbai). And many major roads lead to Aurangabad.

Malena, a very enjoyable page on Aurangabad and the Fort. it was good you had time to split the trip to the Fort and Ellora across two days.

Thank you Juan! I'm glad to hear that Santi commented on my India trip. I actually met Santi and his friend in Uppsala just the day after I came back from India.

Another great page, Malena. Your tour through the tunnel with a fire-torch sounds especially exciting. After that, you definitely deserved some delicious Malai Kofta and butter nan. Cheers, Bill

Another amazing page from an amazing woman. You are awesome Malena and for that reason I was the one who nominated you "The Adventurist" for the VT Barney Awards.

Malena, amazing history and beautiful photos of Daulatabad Fort! The tips on the 'Fort Breaking Cannon' and the Dark Passage are very interesting. It sounds like you have to be an expert to figure out Transportation in India!

Excellent page, Malena! I well remember auto-rickshaws and bicycle-rickshaws and mess they were doing on streets all over India when I was there last year.
