On my way to Plovdiv we stopped for a moment in Kalofer to pick up more passengers for the bus ride. This town is amazing. Hidden in the mountains, this very small rural city has alot of history. Situated along both banks of Tundja River, between the Balkan and the Sredna Gora Mountains. Above it stands the highest peak in the Balkan range – Botev peak. One of the oldest in Bulgaria, 158 km east of Sofia and 75 km north of Plovdiv is also the birth place of Hristo Botev.
Legend tells of the founding of Kalofer during the Turkish occupation of Bulgaria in the middle of the sixteenth century. Kalofer is one of the few Bulgarian towns with a large number of operational churches, monasteries, and chapels. It is also a town of strong traditions and local spirit, with many festivals celebrated every year. Kalofer's living tradition is represented by its numerous craftspeople and the town is known for its woodcarving, artistic textiles, and most of all unique Kalofer lace.
For the moment I don't have any pictures of this small town but soon I will. If you travel from Kazanlak to Sofia or Plovdiv, I encourage you to stop for a few in Kalofer. |
