  • Pena tu is a big rock with prehistoric carvings, set atop a mountain peak with a stunning panoramic view. When I say prehistoric, I mean thousands of years old! It is speculated that Asturias was one of the first areas populated in Spain. This is one of several sites in Asturies with prehistoric art. Most others are located in caves. There is no admission fee to see this site.

    Things To Do: Asturian Beaches

  • Asturias has some wonderful beaches. I visited so many, I can not remember the names of them all. One of the more popular ones I visited that I liked was Playa de Aguilar in Muros del Nalón, pictured here. The nicest part was the restaurant on the beach, which I remember we had a good lunch at, and of course a nice view.
The link provides an exhaustive list of all the beaches in Asturias. It is in Spanish, but at the very least you can enjoy the pictures. This site lists what facilities (if any) are available at the site, info on location, etc.

This tip was written before the terrible oil spill (bigger than the Exxon Valdez) off the coast of Spain in November of 2002.) Some costal areas of Asturias have been touched by this terrible disaster. For more information, please see my Galicia, Spain page.

  • You must see the sacred cave (la Santa Cueva de la Covadonga). This is a pilgrimage place for many people. The waterfall here is supposed to be lucky. Also located on this site is the large and beautiful Basilica de la Covadonga. This is a very important location in Asturian history. This is where the Asturian king, Pelayo and his army, fought back the invading Moors at this spot, and prevented them from conquering the kingdom of Asturias. There is a story of how the Virgin Mary appeared to Pelayo and you can figure out the rest- the good guys won! (Sidebar: Little known fact- not ALL of Spain was conquered and thusly influenced by the Moors. Asturias remained free from Moorish influence. As a result, indigenous language, culture and traditions remained in-tact in Asturias because of what happend on this spot.)

While in the area, also take the scenic drive to nearby Lake Enol. The drive is very beautiful. A trip to the area of the Covandonga makes a nice afternoon excursion.

  • There is a lovely view from atop Peñatu. Peñatu is an great carved rock, estimated to have been created more than 4,000 years ago. It is one of countless examples of significant ancient art in Asturies. It requires a short hike through the woods to get to the peak. Along the way we encountered friendly free-range goats munching in the forest.

  • Cabo Peñas/Cabu Peñes is the northernmost point in Asturias. It is a rocky formation that juts out into the Cantabrian sea and is a popular destination for people who want to enjoy a scenic vista. The view of and the view from are worth the visit.

  • Bar none, the most fun I had in Asturias was when I participated in various festivals to honor the local patron saint. I'm not a big "partier", but I have to say I found it impossible not to join the party. Every town has it's own patron saint, who is "honored" every year by the town throwing a humongous party. Depending on the size of the town, activities can include parades, live folk music, rock concerts, bonfires, cultural events, costumes, carnival rides, and lots and lots of eating (local cuisine of course!) drinking (local specialties of course!) and dancing.

  • The mountain range that runs through nothern Spain, the Picos de Europa, the Pyranees, are absolutely magnificent any time of year. Many people do not realize Spain is the second-most mountainous region in Europe, second only to Switzerland. Asturias is a great destination for people into nature travel, hiking, climbing, skiing and camping. The mountains in most places are very sparsely populated because it is impossible to "develop" these places. Mountains like these are one example of many of the majestic vistas througout Asturias.
