The art of dispensing sidra - Asturias

The art of dispensing sidra

and Sidrerias: Traditional Asturian Food

The photo is a friend demonstrating his amature talents at pouring sidra (alcoholic apple cider) in the traditional manner. Sidrerias, which specialize in this "rough" cider, often have an excellent menu of local specialties.

The best restaurants are the places where the locals eat (which is pretty much everywhere in Asturies.) Great restaurants and cafeterias abound in Asturies. When you are in Oviedo, be sure to eat at an outdoor restaurant in the old quarter (casco antiguo)! In Mieres the best local food is found in the cider square (Plaza de Requejo), its one of the best places in Asturias to enjoy sidra in the traditional manner as demonstrated by my friend.

Favorite Dish: FABADA!!!! (Asturian bean and sausage stew.) And crusty pan (spanish bread) with Cabrales (a very strong Asturian blue) cheese. Also, pollo con ajillo y patatas fritas (chicken with garlic and spanish french fries with sidra to drink!)

My Asturian Fabada - Asturias

My Asturian Fabada

If you like to eat Asturias is a great destination

Asturian food centers around simple ingredients, always served at their freshest and almost always locally produced. Since the weather in Asturias tends to be cool and rainy, hearty fare and stews are on the menu-- forget about gazpacho (although if you want it, you can still get it in Asturias.) Also, Asturias is a fresh fish & shellfish and dairy lovers dream destination!

Please see my travelogue about Asturian food if you would like more details.

If you have an interest in a vacation that centers around food, this link: www.asturnor.com/gastronomia2.htm will take you to a list of the many gastronomic fairs throught Asturias. They are listed by location. It's in Spanish, but you can easily translate entire pates by pasting the web address at :babelfish.altavista.com into English.

Favorite Dish: One word encompasses the heart and soul of Asturian gastronomy-- Fabada (pictured here.) Any "real" Asturian restaurant will serve it (not cafes though). It's flavor may vary, but it will always be delicioso!!! Que rico! Fabada is good, honest food. No pretense- just food that warms you to the core and makes you feel good.
