Church of St. John the Baptist | Catholic Church of St. John Paul the Baptist |
Madaba was the first stop I made during a 6 day drive through Jordan. I needed to get gasoline, and stopped here for some sightseeing and a snack. Madaba is interesting because it has a sizeable Christian minority. I quickly found this church on the hill. It was also a school - a girl's school - and the students were getting out for the afternoon when I showed up. |
| moasic tiles - John Paul II |
| | John Paul II and Mount Nemo mosaic A moasic portrain commemorating St. John Paul II's trip to Mount Nemo where Moses viewed the Promised Land just beyond the Jordan River then succumbed to death without realizing his goal. Pope John Paul II preached here over a panorama that encompassed the Jordan River Valley, Dead Sea, Jericho and Jerusalem. The serpentine cross in the moasic symbolizes the brass serpent that God commanded Moses to fashion to help cure his followers from their afflictions. |
