Hotel in Kandy and other Sri Lanka Hotel/Accommodation Reviews

We stayed at two places in Kandy. The Queens Hotel has a few things going for it: very central location (across the road from the Temple of the Tooth and the lake), a sense of history (it's an old British Raj-era hotel), and price (we got a room for US$25/night including breakfast). However, the rooms were run down, bathrooms mildewy, no mosquito protection, and the front desk staff was very rude when it was time to check out (we had a dispute over the bill; when they discovered we were right, they didn't even offer an apology). This left a bad taste in our mouth.

The Lonely Planet says the hotel has bedspreads your grandmother would die for but our room had bedspreads it looked like your grandmother had died on!

Unique Qualities: Decent pool area. Rooms had very high ceilings. Very grand lobby area and ballroom. Decent buffet breakfast. If someone were to pump a ton of money into this place to give it some renovation, it could truly be a showplace; I think it's got good bones under there somewhere.

This was the other hotel we stayed at in Kandy, once we got out of the Queens. What a difference! We stayed here only one night, but wished it could have been longer. The hotel had stunning views of the city, a lovely garden pool area, very nice restaurant, and very professional, helpful staff. The rooms were clean and pleasantly decorated, and had balconies overlooking the pool area (others may have had different views). The price was more expensive (we paid about US$75/night, but our driver didn't negotiate this one). Great breakfast buffet, too.

Unique Qualities: Great views, clean/modern rooms, air/con, very large restaurant and pretty pool area.

Small but pleasant hotel, owned and run by a German man and his Sri Lankan wife. Rooms with aircon, radio/CD player, nice bathrooms. Breakfast cooked to order. Hotel is listed in Lonely Planet. Owners are very pleasant. Hotel is in a somewhat touristy part of Negombo.

Unique Qualities: Right on the beach. Restaurant on premises. There's also a large seafood and pizza restaurant (King Coconut) next door.
