Clifton Hill: Guinness World Records Museum

  • The Guinness World Records Museum is one of the many museums and attractions that line Clifton Hill in the ultra touristy town of Niagara Falls.

    Having visited the Falls, I was looking for something to do to kill the time while waiting for my bus back to Toronto....and this museum looked as interesting as any of the others!

    I paid 12.80 CAD (February 2006) for a ticket and spent about an hour inside the museum reading about the various unbelievable feats that people have undertaken in order to claim their place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

    The museum is not particularly large, with the exhibitions housed on two floors. However, many of the exhibitions take the form of narrative descriptions and facts and so they don't take up much space. Consequently, there is a lot of information contained within this small museum.

    The various records are split into categories within the museum. For example, you can read facts, take part in interactive activities and see video footage on records in the following categories:

    Entertainment: for example, the most Oscars won for a film or an actor;

    Music: for example, the most number one hits or the most albums sold by an artist;

    Sport: for example, the most gold medals won or goals scored by a sportsperson;

    Weather extremes: for example, the hottest, coldest, wettest and driest conditions ever recorded on Earth;

    Eating feats: for example, the most hotdogs or eggs or chocolate bars consumed in a given time period;

    People: for example, the world's tallest, fattest, heaviest, shortest man/woman;

    Animals: for example, the world's fastest, deadliest, oldest creatures.

    One of the World Record holders was the CN Tower (which I had visited a couple of days earlier) - the world's tallest free-standing tower!

    You can return to the museum for a second time for the discounted price of 5 CAD within 2 days of your original ticket purchase if you so wish. Just keep your receipt and present it when you return.

    Horseshoe Falls: Journey Behind the Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Niagara Falls Horseshoe Falls
  • Journey Behind the Falls entrance

  • The Journey Behind the Falls is an excellent way to get a close up view of Horseshoe Falls.

    An elevator takes you down to a 200 metre long tunnel that runs behind the Falls. This tunnel takes you 1/3 of the way across Horseshoe Falls, and from here you can see the water cascading past through the "Great Falls Portal" windows. At the time of my visit, the view was obscured somewhat by icicles hanging from the windows!

    However, the lack of a view wasn't too much of a problem since the main attraction of this journey is to *hear* the Falls. The promotional material speaks of hearing the "thunder" of the Falls.....and this is a very accurate description of the deafening noise that awaits you!

    The best view of the Falls is to be had from the observation decks at the foot of the Falls - just a few metres above the water level. This was a spectacular sight on a cold winter's day with the combination of water, ice and snow providing breathtaking views. The lower of the two observation decks was closed at the time of my visit due to it being covered in deep snow.

    Due to the lower observation deck being out of bounds, the cost of my ticket was just 8.50 CAD (reduced from the usual price of 10 CAD)....however, the website states that as at August 2006 the prices are now:

    Adults: 11 CAD
    Kids (6-12): 6.50 CAD
    Kids (<5): Free

    A great way to see (and hear!!) the Falls up close!

     Excellent tips and photos of your Niagara Falls visit!! The only time I was there was also in the winter (March, 1977) but I missed out completely on those interesting attractions that you pointed out.
