The island of Kalymnos is located in the Dodecanese islands, just to the north of Kos.

The island's capital, Pothia, is built ampitheatrically around a harbour, and contains many brightly coloured buildings. Many of the island's inhabitants painted their homes blue and white (the national colours of Greece) as a show of resistance against the Italians (to whom the island belonged between 1912 and 1948).

The island is famous as the home of sponge-fishermen who, each year, set off on a voyage to the coast of Africa to dive for sponges.
