Patmos, Greece

Patmos (population: approx 3000) is located in the Dodecanese islands, to the south of Samos, Ikaria and Fourni, and to the north of Kalymnos, Leros and Lipsi.

The island is connected to all of the surrounding islands by a hydrofoil service. I visited Patmos from Samos - the journey was around 1 hour 30 minutes, including a short stop at the tiny island of Agathonisi.

Hydrofoils (and ferries) arrive at the port of Skala, one of the two main settlements on Patmos. Skala is a typical, pleasant Greek island town, with a number of cafes and shops and a low key atmosphere.

A short taxi ride (or a long uphill walk!!) away is the island's capital, Chora. Here you will find the island's most famous landmarks - The Monastery of St John the Divine and the cave in which he reportedly wrote the Book of Revelation.
