"Fuerteventura, Canary Islands" Isla de Fuerteventura by SWFC_Fan

Isla de Fuerteventura Travel Guide: 268 reviews and 608 photos

Fuerteventura is part of the Canary Islands, located close to the west coast of Africa.

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands in terms of area (after Tenerife), but has a population of only 30,000 compared to 700,000 on Gran Canaria and 650,000 on Tenerife, so is sparsely populated.

Large areas of the island are covered in sand dunes, which is the result of sand having been blown across from the nearby Sahara desert. The area around Corralejo in the north of the island, and the Jandia peninsula at the south of the island have the largest areas of sand dunes.

Strong winds often blow along the island's coasts, making it a popular destination for windsurfers.

The weather is good for practically the whole year (it was 70 degrees when I was there in mid-November), so well worth the 4 hour flight from the UK!
