The city of Trieste is located in the north-east of Italy, just a few miles from the border with Slovenia.
In fact, it is this proximity to Slovenia that led me to visit Trieste. Having decided to visit the Slovenian coast, and Piran in particular, Trieste proved to be a much more convenient gateway to the region than flying into Slovenia (specifically, Ljubljana) itself.
So, on a Sunday morning in April 2005, I took an Alitalia flight from Manchester, via Milan Malpensa, to Trieste (or rather, Friuli Venezia Giulia airport - an expensive 60km taxi ride north of Trieste!).
The weather was cold and overcast when I arrived at the centrally-located Hotel Alabarda (www.hotelalabarda.it) on Sunday afternoon.
A short walk from the hotel brought me to the sea front - busy with locals taking a Sunday evening stroll. A few minutes further on, I arrived at Trieste's Canal Grande and then the impressive Piazza dell Unita d'Italia (a vast square - again thronging with locals enjoying the end of their weekend).
I found a nice, cheap Chinese restaurant located just behind the piazza and enjoyed a good meal and a few beers before retiring to bed in readiness for my early morning journey to Slovenia.
After a Continental breakfast at the Alabarda and some helpful public transport information from the hotel's friendly staff, I made the 10 minute walk to the city's bus station (located adjacent to Trieste's central railway station).
Typically, there were no buses heading to Slovenia on a Monday (I could return the next day and there'd be plenty of buses!) and no trains heading to Slovenia on any day (as far as I could tell). And so, my only option was another costly taxi journey over the border. I opted to get the taxi to Koper (the closest major town in Slovenia) and then find a bus for the remainder of my journey to Piran.
This was my first, rather rushed glimpse of Trieste - but I knew that I'd be returning a week later to spend a full day in the city before my return flight to the UK......
.....Following a fantastic week in sunny Slovenia, I returned to the city that I had passed through 7 days previously - only this time it was basked in hot sunshine!
I retraced my footsteps of the previous week, and climbed to the highest points of the city for the spectacular panoramic views over the port.
I was glad to have had this opportunity to spend a little time in Trieste and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend others to pay this city at least a brief visit.

Jonathan, fabulous report about your adventures in Trieste. You obviously missed an other opportunity to get into Slovenia from Trieste. You could have taken the local tram to Opicina and then a taxi for approx. 10 Euro to the Slovenian town of Sezana, which has train connections to Ljubljana and Nova Gorica.
Happy New Year, Holger!
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't been to Ljubljana yet - so this might be an option for when I do! I'd certainly like to go back to Slovenia some day...and I'd happily re-visit Trieste en-route.
Interesting about dissapointing Capuccino in Italy - this is the thing - what a country is famous for we expect it to be excellent but standards of foreign imported foods and drink is so good now in England
We drove around and around in the dark on the freeways surrounding trying to find the exit to Porec or somewhere over the border to pick up a friend in Slovenia - what a great look we missed!nice shots as usual.
September is usually fine, really - statistically, the temps shouldn't even be below zero.. :o) And yeah, I'm pretty sure the Tromsø fans won't hurt you - not *that* much, anyway!;o) Good night, Jonathan - I'm off to bed:o)
