Old center of Leidschendam. LEIDSCHENDAM, South Holland. Situated between Voorburg, Voorschoten, Wassenaar, The Hague, Zoetermeer. Used to be Veur (north) and Wilsveen and Stompwijk (south).
In 1938 The name Leidschendam was offical after Veur and Stompwijk had fused. Now (2002) Leidschendam and Voorburg are fused to "Leidschendam-Voorburg".
Leidschendam as well as Voorburg have it's own old typical center, but there will be some big changes in the center (Damlaan) of L'dam coming period.....
Through Leidschendam a channel; "The Vliet" runs, and over The Vliet are two bridges, de slocks. Asides the Vliet are the most attractive buildings. The most well-known are: The Salamander (windmill), The Pieter-Paulus church of Leidschendam, and all the boats that lie there. Leidschendam has grown into a big village and there’s still much work to do.
"Epistel" of schoolstudent: The history of Leidschendam. when on January the first 1938 Veur and stompwijk were fused together Leidschendam was made. Through there the Vliet (a channal) runs. In 47 after Christ the roman landlord Cnaeus Domitius Corbulo orderd to dig a channel witch we now know as the channel of Corbulo. So that means that people must have lived a long time in Leidschendam. In the 14th century the council of Holland ordered to let them build the dyke “Hoven Zijdwinde”. A part of it lies in Leidschendam. In 1985 there lived about 32.000 people in Leidschendam, and about 2.000 in Stompwijk. |
