Clothes For Layering: MARK TWAIN'S SUGGESTION ON WHAT TO PACK
  • Tip Rating:

  • Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Mark Twain once said, 'The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.' Summers in the City can be very foggy and windy. It's not unusual to see people wearing ski parkas in Fisherman's Wharf after the fog rolls in.

Also, the weather can be different depending on what neighborhood you are in. Be prepared for anything, dress in layers: water-resistent windbreaker, sweatshirt with hood, shirt and undershirt. (Use your daypack as a closet, not for storing valuables.)

And wear long pants & comfortable shoes. In this City, only tourists wear shorts.

Packing Lists: JACK LONDON'S VIEW ON EARTHQUAKES
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

  • Miscellaneous: "The street was a wall of flame. And against this wall of flame, silhouetted sharply, were two United States cavalrymen sitting their horses, calming watching. That was all. Not another person was in sight. In the intact heart of the city two troopers sat their horses and watched. "

The most recent big one was in 1989. If a big one hits while you're here, stand in a doorway of the building that you are in and hold on. Don't run outside or take an elevator. Stay away from glass walls and beware of fallen telephone wire. Walk, public transportation will be down. Make sure your cell phone has a full charge each day. If you do not have cell phones, before you leave for vacation, designate someone back home as the "Command Central" whose job it will be to take all emergency phone calls from everyone in your vacation party.

good (but not extraordinary) Irish Coffees, but the food is poor. also, the staff is extremely rude. if you've a problem with an order, don't expect a friendly resolution. just stick to the coffees and don't expect service with a smile.
