Helsingor or Elsinore is an old danush city. The city dates back 70 BC and its name originates from the helsinger, the settlers, but the first time when the name was mentioned was in 1231. The city was a prosperous one because the Sound Duty, a shipping tax to all trading vessels passing through the Sound between Helsingor (Denmark) and Helsingborg (Sweden) till 1857 when it was abolished by international agreement. From then became a bad time to the city but in the last years it seems better with small and large industries grewing up and hotels, museums and shoppings. |
