We started this new page together in early June 2002, soon after Danny moved to Devon with me. Our first summer together was filled with some pretty memorable occasions, The Grand London VT Meeting in June and, of course, our wedding in August. We are keeping our individual pages, Skipper & Cuckoo, but will work at updating this one regularly. |
| | Friday 2 August and Sunday 4 August are special dates for us. In 2002, Danny and I married at our local town hall on 2 August and on 4 August we held our handfasting, blessing, at the foot of Glastonbury Tor. Our marriage was blessed with the Tor watching over us and the sun shining down on us, a truly special day. We have placed pictures on our Glastonbury page. |
Glastonbury Tor has a special place in our hearts as this is where our Handfasting took place on August 4 2002. Two days after our Handfasting we climbed the Tor the hard way to pay our respects to the Tor. The Tor was the highest place in the Holy Isle of Avalon in the times when Somerest was called the Summer Sea. It is a place when in times of the Romans, Christianity tried to over-rule the old beliefs of the native people, by trying to build an Abbey on the top of their Holy Isle. The Tor never allowed an Abbey or a symbol to be built on it, and the Tower now is only the remains of a once great church which was never completed due to The Tor not wanting it there! Our Handfasting was a truly special occasion. Following a morning of torrential rain, the clouds parted above The Tor and the sun blessed us with her warmth. Blessed Be
| | We spent the weekend, 22/23 June 2002, in London, joining with many other VT members for what was a wonderful meeting. This was arranged by Claire (VT member Caddy) and Martin (VT member Disco_M) VT members from all around the world attended and it finally gave us the chance to meet with friends that we have made on this great site:-) For pictures, please see our London page. Stephanie brought over VT t-shirts for those of us who were at the London VT meeting in June 2002. We have pictures of this on our London page |
We live in the small market town of Barnstaple in North Devon. This picture is of the town square taken at the height of the summer season, when all of the flowers are in full bloom. Barnstaple prides itself of the beautiful displays of flowers throughout the summer season and regularly enters and wins national competitions. The town is on the banks of the River Taw. This river was made famous by the book Tarka the Otter written by Henry Williamson. Francis Chichester, the first man to circumnavigate the globe singlehandedly, is from this area. The area is also renowned for producing famouos seagoing Captains and discoverers. We will write more about this in our other local pages.
| | Instow is where Catherine was born and brought up. It is a small village, a coastal resort, 6 miles from Barnstaple at the mouth of the River's Taw and Torridge. Danny has promised Catherine that when we are rich and infamous we will buy a home here, in the meantime we will have to make do with regular visits which include sitting on the seafront, eating a Hockings ice cream (with as much clotted cream as will fit) and watching the beautiful sunsets over the village of Appledore and the never ending horizon. |
The beautiful metropolis of Antwerp is Danny's home port. He was born and lived here for the first 17 years of his life before joining the Belgian Navy. Since then he has lived and worked in various continents living the life of a self-declared bachelor, until Catherine finally hooked him after accepting an invitation for coffee in Antwerp! Danny's roots are here in Antwerp and the old city holds a special place in his heart. Although he isn't homesick, the Cathedral symbolises his beacon.
