Kinkakuji Temple's Tea House - Sekka-tei: Japanese Tea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Kinkakuji Temple's Tea House - Sekka-tei

Sekka-tei is a small tea house built in honor of a visit by Emperor Go-Mizuno-o in the 17th century. The simplicity of the tea house is meant to focus the attention of the guest on the tea ceremony.

Sekka-tei was burned down in a fire in 1874 and was reconstructed in 1884. The stone lantern and basin, along with a stool in front of the tea house all come from the Muromachi Period Hana-no-Gosho (Flower Palace). Inside, the teahouse is quite modest but contains a well noted, crooked pillar supporting the alcove. The pillar is made from rare Nandin wood, a very slow growing tree, and to reach this size is very rare indeed.

Favorite Dish: Japanese Tea with Sweet

The Japanese Crackers are something you must try when you are in Japan. There are different flavuors, from plain, chilli to seaweed ones. You can even buy teh nicely packed Japanese Crackers home.

    Various Locations: Japanese Pickles

Pickles are eaten with sushi or sashimi. Japanese pickles are usually made of radish and they taste very nice even eaten plain. I was almost tempted to buy after trying the pickles at one of the shops. Now I regret not buying some back.

If you have problem finding food, go to the Kyoto Station as there are many eateries and restaurants there. Prices are very affordable and servings were big.

Favorite Dish: Udon and Cold Soba Set. The green tea offered was good too.

Something which you must try. The Green Tea Ice Cream. Thumbs Up! There are vending machines selling the ice cream too. I prefer those in tubs sold at shop fronts though.
