S.F. Views: Watch the Hang Gliders at Fort Funston

  • Hang Glider at Fort Funston

  • Favorite Thing: We love coming to Fort Funston for the short hikes and for the scenery. Hang gliders soar back and forth on the air currents rising off the cliffs, and they come so close that we can actually make out the pilots’ faces!

Fort Funston is also popular with dog owners because it is one of the few places that dog owners have official permission to let their dogs off the leash.

The winds that give the hang gliders lift also tend to make it a bit cold, so bring a jacket just in case!

The Fort Funston parking area is just off Skyline Boulevard (Route 35) just south of John Muir Drive.

Food / Drink: San Francisco Tap Water-Drink it!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: San Francisco's tap water is not only safe to drink, but it actually tastes ok. What I should say that it has no taste, and that’s a good thing! Don’t waste your money on bottled water here. Just carry a refillable bottle and you’ll be set.

Fog / Weather: Best Time to Visit San Francisco

  • Favorite Thing: The best time to visit San Francisco is during the months of September and October. This period we call “Indian Summer” is when we get the most sunshine. It also occurs after the tourist season, so you’ll probably get better hotels deals.

Information / Sources: Tipping at Restaurants

  • Favorite Thing: In calculating your daily food budget, remember to add 15-20% to your total.

In San Francisco, as in most of the U.S, the service is NOT included at restaurants. There are exceptions to this rule, but the exceptions are clearly stated on the menus. It is customary to tip a minimum of 15% of the cost of the meal (before taxes), but if you get excellent service or if you receive a complimentary dish, you should leave 18% to 20% or at least round up to the nearest dollar.

Most servers earn minimum wage and rely on the money they make on tips, so remember to be good to your waiter if your waiter has been good to you.

Information / Sources: Tipping Taxi Drivers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: There is no set rule. I can only tell you what I do. I typically give a minimum of 15% and round up to the nearest $5. It’s so much easier this way. For example a $3.90 fare becomes $5.00, a $7.50 fare becomes $10, a $17.00 fare becomes $20.00 and so on. So, it’s more than 15%, but considering what these drivers make for a living, I don’t mind.

Remember to talk to your drivers. They are usually very friendly and helpful.

I just learned from Martin_S that you own a B&B in SF, so I had to immediately go and check out your website. It looks wonderful! Someday, I want to hear your B&B stories!
