Getting TO/AROUND: With over half a million bicycles, cycling is the preferred method of transportation in Amsterdam. There is a very well developed web of bike roads complete with street signs and stoplights, and everything within the canal belt is within 10 minutes by bike.

You can join in the fun by renting a bike for the day, or for the week at one of the many bike rental shops around. Don’t forget to lock your bike. Over 200,000 bikes are stolen every year!

Getting TO/AROUND: With over 150 canals totaling over 100 kilometers in length, Amsterdam is an ideal city to explore by boat. The tours last about 90 minutes and take you around the city and the harbor. All the major attractions are described in Dutch, German, French and English. It’s a great way to be introduced to this great city.

There are several stops around the city, where one can hop on.

    About $10 per person.

Getting TO/AROUND: Amsterdam is flat and compact, and most of the sites are within easy walking distance from the center of the city. There's a lot of old irregular brick, so gals, avoid high heals!

Watch out for bicyclists. Avoid the reddish colored paving as it is reserved for cyclists, who WILL get mad and yell obscenities (I would too!) at you.

Getting TO/AROUND: Amsterdam can easily be reached by train from many European cities. In fact, we traveled from Paris to Amsterdam in just a few hours. The trains are clean and comfortable, and first class is actually affordable. Non-Europeans can purchase discount Eurail tickets online or from a travel agency back home.

Getting TO/AROUND: The tram is a handy way to get from the train station to the center of town quickly and economically. A single ticket is .80 Euro and is good for up to one hour of use. Also available are day and multi day passes. If you're walking near the tracks always be on the lookout for an incoming train and quickly move away from the tracks!

How lucky you are! Rijksmuseum was under construction when I was there. Useful page. Greetings from Istanbul.

Just thought I'd let you know the Dutch Wikipedia claims the NEMO building looks like a boat by accident. It is built on the foundations of the tunnel underneath it and is the mirror image of the tunnels entrance

Great photos and tips on Europe's sin city! I have a feeling the red light district is similar to the one in Antwerp. Great tip about the houseboats, that might be an interesting place to stay! Best, Paige
