The Rijksmuseum houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, the Golden Age, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and numerous other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The collection also includes silver objects, delftware, doll houses, prints, drawings, the mysterious Asiatic art and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history.

Rijksmuseum-find Maria
Architect P.J.H. Cuypers designed the Rijksmuseum in 1885. The exterior is intricately detailed with tile panels, sculptures, mottos and ornamentation.

Rijksmuseum exterior detail
Here's an example of the fine tile work on the wall below the gabled portion of the museum's roof. Sorry, but it's not very clear in this picture. Trust me, it's fine work!
Gabled roofs of many shapes and sizes are a common feature throughout Amsterdam and the entire region.

Rijksmuseum stairwell
Cuypers gave equal importance to all parts of the building. This stairwell is an example of the special attention to detail given by the architect. It truly is a beautiful building.

Rijksmuseum "The Kitchen Maid"
Johannes Vermeer was a master in interpreting light and shadow in his paintings. This painting, known as The Kitchen Maid, is an example of one of Vermeer's genre pieces, which depict people in their everyday surroundings: at home, in a café or at work.

Rijksmuseum "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn is without a doubt the most famous of Holland's seventeenth-century painters, and The Night Watch is the most famous painting in the Rijksmuseum. The picture is a huge group portrait of a division of the civic guard. What’s distinct about this and other of his paintings is that the subjects are captured as they move into action and not simply sitting in a neat row.

The Love Letter
This is another example of Johannes Vemeer’s fine work. The painting known as The Love Letter portrays a well-to-do woman, clothed in yellow, being handed a letter by her maid as she prepares to play her lute.

Westerkerk Church
The Westerkerk Church, not too far from the Anne Frank House, is famous for having the tallest church tower in the city, at 85m. The church is a gathering place for Amsterdam's Dutch Reformed community. For a unique perspective of the city, climb the tower.
The church is open from Easter to mid-September, Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm, and July and August on Saturdays. The tower is open from April through September, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

van Gogh Museum
This museum is not to be missed. The museum contains the largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world. It chronicles the artist’s life and tracks his developments by comparing his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century in the collection. This is one of my favorite museums!
Address: The entrance is at the Paulus Potterstraat 7
Directions: The Van Gogh Museum is located near the Rijksmuseum. It can be reached by tram numbers 2 and 5 from the Central Station, or simply ride your bike.

NEMO
The New Metropolis Museum (NEMO) is an educational attraction where you and your kids can discover a world of science and technology in an entertaining way. Superstar Italian Architect Renzo Piano, inspired by the shape of ships docked nearby, designed the building in 1997.
Directions: NEMO is easy to reach with public transportation. Amsterdam’s Central Station is less than ten minutes’ walk from NEMO and bus line 22 stops close by at the Kadijksplein stop.
