  • The Westerkerk Church, not too far from the Anne Frank House, is famous for having the tallest church tower in the city, at 85m. The church is a gathering place for Amsterdam's Dutch Reformed community. For a unique perspective of the city, climb the tower.

The church is open from Easter to mid-September, Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm, and July and August on Saturdays. The tower is open from April through September, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

  • The Anne Frank House is probably the most famous canal house in Amsterdam. The rear house or "annex" is where Anne Frank and her family went into hiding from 1942 to 1944 to escape deportation by the Germans. Her famous diary, which she wrote while in hiding, is on display as part of the permanent exhibit.

  • The queues can be a bit long, especially in the summer months. To avoid the crowds, try to visit early in the morning or late in the evening.

The museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm (to 7pm from June to August)

  • The New Metropolis Museum (NEMO) is an educational attraction where you and your kids can discover a world of science and technology in an entertaining way. Superstar Italian Architect Renzo Piano, inspired by the shape of ships docked nearby, designed the building in 1997.

Directions: NEMO is easy to reach with public transportation. Amsterdam’s Central Station is less than ten minutes’ walk from NEMO and bus line 22 stops close by at the Kadijksplein stop.

  • The Rijksmuseum houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, the Golden Age, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and numerous other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The collection also includes silver objects, delftware, doll houses, prints, drawings, the mysterious Asiatic art and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history.

  • Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn is without a doubt the most famous of Holland's seventeenth-century painters, and The Night Watch is the most famous painting in the Rijksmuseum. The picture is a huge group portrait of a division of the civic guard. What’s distinct about this and other of his paintings is that the subjects are captured as they move into action and not simply sitting in a neat row.

  • Johannes Vermeer was a master in interpreting light and shadow in his paintings. This painting, known as The Kitchen Maid, is an example of one of Vermeer's genre pieces, which depict people in their everyday surroundings: at home, in a café or at work.

  • The Love Letter

This is another example of Johannes Vemeer’s fine work. The painting known as The Love Letter portrays a well-to-do woman, clothed in yellow, being handed a letter by her maid as she prepares to play her lute.

  • Architect P.J.H. Cuypers designed the Rijksmuseum in 1885. The exterior is intricately detailed with tile panels, sculptures, mottos and ornamentation.

  • Here's an example of the fine tile work on the wall below the gabled portion of the museum's roof. Sorry, but it's not very clear in this picture. Trust me, it's fine work!

Gabled roofs of many shapes and sizes are a common feature throughout Amsterdam and the entire region.

How lucky you are! Rijksmuseum was under construction when I was there. Useful page. Greetings from Istanbul.

Just thought I'd let you know the Dutch Wikipedia claims the NEMO building looks like a boat by accident. It is built on the foundations of the tunnel underneath it and is the mirror image of the tunnels entrance

Great photos and tips on Europe's sin city! I have a feeling the red light district is similar to the one in Antwerp. Great tip about the houseboats, that might be an interesting place to stay! Best, Paige
