Favorite Thing: Much like my home city of San Francisco, Amsterdam's architectural beauty lies in the countless residential buildings. From the 16th to the 17th centuries and beyond, many of the homes were built with gables, which served not only to hide the roofs from public view, but also to identify the houses until the number system was introduced in 1795. Pictured here is an example of the neck gable, also known as the bottle gable. This design was introduced in the 1640's and was continued off and on through the 19th century.

Favorite Thing: The spout gable was a copy of the earliest wooden gables. This particular design was used primarily for warehouses from the 1580's to the 1700's. Notice the huge beam sticking out above the top window? This is used to hoist goods into the attic and furniture into the removable windows below.

Favorite Thing: The step gable was favored by the Dutch Renaissance architects from 1580 to 1660. As its name implies, this design featured a series of steps culminating at the top.

Favorite Thing: The residents of Amsterdam once paid property taxes based of the area of the front of the house. In order to get around this technicality, many of the homes were built very tall an narrow. The wealthier the family was, the wider their house was.

ozalp Tue Jun 19, 2007 07:44 UTC How lucky you are! Rijksmuseum was under construction when I was there. Useful page. Greetings from Istanbul. | middelburrug Wed Nov 15, 2006 12:55 UTC Just thought I'd let you know the Dutch Wikipedia claims the NEMO building looks like a boat by accident. It is built on the foundations of the tunnel underneath it and is the mirror image of the tunnels entrance | pabertra Mon Jan 24, 2005 01:22 UTC Great photos and tips on Europe's sin city! I have a feeling the red light district is similar to the one in Antwerp. Great tip about the houseboats, that might be an interesting place to stay!
