To me, Amalfi was a bit touristy, although it was still worth the visit. It served as a transfer point on our day trip through the Amalfi Coast to Ravello.
I recommend doing what we did, which is to head straight to Ravello from Sorrento transferring at Amalfi. Then catch Amalfi on the way back.
The town has a pretty church and, if you’re hungry, a restaurant that sells the biggest pizza slices I have ever seen. If you walk the main drag, you'll see it.
