Temple of Apolo-Pompeii
Now that you’ve seen the museum collection, head to Pompeii. Pompeii is one of the world's best-preserved towns of Ancient Rome.
Pompeii can be visited on a day-trip form Naples, Sorrento and even Rome. It can also be visited in transit (from Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast to Naples or Rome for example.)
From Napels, take the inter-city train heading to Sorrento. About half way to Sorrento, you’ll reach Pompeii..

Model of Pompeii at the Museum in Naples
If you're planning a trip to Pompeii, first stop by the The National Archaeological Museum to see the scale model of the ancient city. We found it to be helpful in preparation for our visit to Pompeii.

Maria and her new buddy
The museum also houses Etruscan and Egyptian antiquities, antique coins and the infamous “Secret Room.” See the “Secret Room” Travelogue for a sample of what you’ll see.

Pompeii Fresco
Many frescos were also removed from the walls of many of the buildings in Pompeii. Fortunately for us, most are now on display at museums and a huge amount of them can be seen at the National Archaeological Museum.

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in Europe, with the collection that Charles of Bourbon inherited from the Farnese of Parma, bronze and marble sculptures, paintings and furnishings recovered from the excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum and other parts of Campania.

Mosaic from Pompeii
The National Archaeological Museum has an extraordinary collection of frescoes and mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is said that this museum has the best collection, and I don't doubt it. While there, we sign up to see the "Secret Room" which has an erotic collection of statues, frescos, mosaics and jewelry. See my "Secret Room" Travelogue for a sneak peak. Amazing!
Address: Piazza Museo 19. 9am-7pm. Closed Tuesdays.

Galleria Umberto I
Naples has almost no open spaces or parks, but it does have lively streets and a few gallerias. We found that walking around Naples was the best way to really experience the essence of the city. While staying wary of the Vespas, we managed to find Via Toledo where the whole city seems to be out for the passeggiata, showing off their clothes and openly examining all the passers-by.
The Galleria in the picture is located at the southern end of Via Toledo.
