Pictures don't do this room justice. This is really a "must see" activity! Maybe that's why the guards don't let you take any pictures. I took this picture from the hip and WITHOUT FLASH, so no damage was done from my part. As far as the crowd was concerned, having been only three weeks after the 9-11 attacks, this was a very light day. For a virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel and the museums go to the web site below. .

Check out my St. Peter's Cathedral travelogue. This place is unbelievable. First of all, it is huge. Second of all it is incredibly beautiful. I highly recommend hiring a walking tour to get a better understanding of the history, the art and the Architecture of this place.

"The Roman Forum was not simply the core of an ancient city; for many it was the center of the universe. From the birth of the empire under Augustus in 31 B.C., and for nearly five hundred years thereafter, Rome ruled—with lacunae—most of what we call the civilized world. From Scotland to the Sahara, and from Gibraltar to the Euphrates, the Roman Empire was in control. Moreover, Rome was the handmaiden of our alphabet, a bellwether of urban organization and its legal institutions, and the creator of startling new horizons in architecture."-from G.E. Kidder Smith. Looking at Architecture. p26

The Coliseum is one of the most famous landmarks in Rome and the world. Although it survives only as a ruin, it still rates as one of the finest examples of Roman architecture and engineering.

These series of steps by Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726) consist of twelve flights of varying width, which descend to the scenic Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti, dating from 1503. This area, a popular hangout for locals and travelers alike, is an ideal place to people-watch.

lina112 Thu Aug 4, 2005 11:43 UTC Very nice pictures and good information. Greetings from spain. Lina | Sandi-2004 Sun Dec 12, 2004 07:36 UTC Nice overview of Rome. Excellent Intro photo. You might like my Intro shot. Yes, the guards in the Sistine Chapel were both humorous & annoying with their "shhhh-ing" & yelling "no photo!!" . You got a good shot of the room. | Jim_Eliason Mon Nov 24, 2003 03:11 UTC Nice page! | vesna04 Sun Sep 28, 2003 18:38 UTC Roma is city worth of visiting. I must see it one day :)) |
