Hanoi Hanoi is my favorite city in Vietnam. The food is cheap and delicious, and the people are great. The old quarter with its French colonial architecture and a large variety of craft shops is a blast to explore. |

Favorite Places Despite it's reputation as the infamous sin-city of Europe, where hashish is smoked openly and hookers put themselves on display in store windows, Amsterdam is a beautiful cosmopolitan city rich in history. For more information visit my Amsterdam page. |
| A typical street of the ancient city of Pompeii |
Pompeii Pompeii is one of our favorite historical places in all of Italy. This ancient city was buried after an unexpected and dramatic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. The result is one of the world's best-preserved towns of Ancient Rome. For more information visit my Pompeii page. |

Important travel web sitesFor updates on crises, violence, and upcoming events, these government sites provide the must know basics. Keep an eye on them and compare the advice. www.travel.state.gov The US Bureau of Consular Affairs posts State Department warnings that focus on specific regions where U.S. citizens may be targets. Consular information sheets for most countries provide details about health conditions, political disturbances, and security, as well as currency information and entry regulations. www.ds-osac.org On this, another U.S. State Department site, the Overseas Security Advisory Council provides security information and travel and terrorist-threat warnings. "Dates to Watch" lists upcoming elections, government meetings, strikes, and other events. www.fco.gov.uk This web site of the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office provides evaluations of more than 200 countries in terms of safety, health, laws, and entry requirements. It includes warnings about specific regions that may pose a threat and divides them into two sections: advisories against all travel and against travel that is not for essential business. www.voyage.gc.ca The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs lists problems such as political instability and disease outbreaks, and gives dates for elections and hurricane and monsoon seasons. |
