Name of Shop: Queen Victoria Market
The Queen Victoria Market was officially opened on 20th March 1878. Today, it is the largest market in Australia, with many of its buildings classified as Historic Buildings. Market trading hours: Tuesday and Thursday 6am 2pm Friday 6am 6pm (general merchandise to 4pm) Saturday 6am 3pm Sunday 9am 4pm (general merchandise from 8am) Sunday is the best day for general shopping as 2 of the sheds that normally sell fruits and vegetables will be selling an assortment of knick-knacks instead. There will also be pony and camel rides for the kids, and various performances.
What To Buy: Apart from the fresh produce and delicatessens, its one of my favourite hunt for cheap and nice clothing. An assortment of stuff such as leathergoods, fabrics, jewellery, handicrafts, fresh flowers and indoor plants (look out for our unique native plants such as the Kangaroo Paw, the flower emblem of Western Australia), handicrafts, authentic Australian artefacts and souvenirs (cheapest in Melbourne).

Postcards, where to get them

If you are a postcard junkie like me, read this! You can get the cheapest postcards in Melbourne from this shop called Cheaper Party Supply at Queen Street (near Queen Victoria Market). The price is 10 for AUD$2.50, but frankly speaking, they are not postcards of top quality. A better, slightly more expensive option, is Jumbuck at Melbourne Central (Level 1). Each 4x6 postcard costs AUD$0.40. Some postoffice also sell postcards for AUD$0.35 each but there's not a lot you can choose from. If you are sending the postcard, you can get the pre-paid maximum cards from the postoffice. They are AUD$1.20 each, so the postcard itself is only AUD$0.20. Pic shows a neat maximum card of the Australian Antartic Territory bought from the postoffice.

The entire street!: Bridge Road

Name of Shop: The entire street!
Attention girls and shopaholics! This place is a MUST! It'll probably turn out to be your best experience in Melbourne. Bridge Road Richmond is a classified Heritage area. There're plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars to rest your feet after a shopping frenzy. In the 1800s, Bridge Road was bustling with industry, creating some of this country's well known brands. In fact, the Pelaco shirt factory sign still remains to this day as a mark of this precint's impact on the local fashion scene. Alongside internationally acclaimed couture, designer shoes and accessories, you'll find fashion factory outlets with budget priced samples and ranges of all the leading labels. I wanted to kick myself when I saw the same suits I bought in the city store selling at 1/3 of the price here.
What To Buy: Clothes, shoes, accessories
What To Pay: $5-$500 (only if you're a big spender!)

They can damage your car beyond repair and cause quite a bit of injury to the passengers inside. Happy driving!! |
