Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, the smallest state on the mainland. It's not a major tourist spot compared to Sydney, Gold Coast, Darwin etc. You don't know what you are missing if you decided to skip Melbourne on your touring route around Australia. :þ
I love camping and the great outback, do check out Off the Beaten Path for the best of Victoria. :)

Not as affordable as it used to be. Rents have gone up and a lot of factory shops have moved on and now just regular chain stores.

Just a quick addition to your warning that it might be better to try and avoid the Kangaroos! They can damage your car beyond repair and cause quite a bit of injury to the passengers inside. Happy driving!!

Hmm, fellow Melburnian speaking. Tips for the outback aren't really relevant to Melbourne-keep 'em for the outback pages. Don't stand in the middle of the Great Ocean Road, anywhere anytime. You will end up as roadkill.
Thanks for the tips. Our family just moved to Melbourne recently and we're still trying to find things to do other than going to Box Hill Centro :)
