The fortified city of Maastricht

by martin_nl - last update: Aug 24, 2003

A part of the city wall called 'Walmuur'
Whether Maastricht is the oldest city in the Netherlands or not, no-one is really sure. It might as well be the city of Nijmegen. However the people living in Maastricht and Zuid-Limburg are sure about it, their city IS the oldest of the country. And it is hard not to agree with them. The city used to be a fortified city and the walls are still standing in quite some some parts of the it. Not only does Maastricht have walls, there are also quite some excavations from Roman times! They settled in the southern part of the province of Limburg already 57 B.C.!

But to think that the Romans were the first people to live in this area is wrong. Already over 250.000 years ago, in the prehistoric times, people were living in the Belv?d?re caves near Maastricht. Nowadays Maastricht is a very lively city with a lot of monuments. 120.000 people inhabit the city and they are very proud of it. Maastricht is a great tourist place. There are some very good museums and it is a great city to walk around and to shop. The Dutch from all over the country love to go to Maastricht, because it just feels like being in a foreign country.

VT-meeting

On August 16 Roy (Imaniac) organised in cooperation with Roelien (Nighthawk) a VT-meeting in Maastricht. It was a really fantastic day, or to say it more accurate a great weekend. On Sunday we also went to visit Vaals and Valkenburg. Check out the travelogues for pictures and a summary of the day.

Pros:"Beautiful fortified city, where you can easily spend some days. A great base to explore southern Limburg."
Cons:"The Vrijthof square is being redecorated, and is a big mess right now!"
In A Nutshell:"Don't leave the Netherlands without paying a visit to this city!"
