  • I was walking along the streets around the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. The weather was just amazing, blue skies and not a single cloud in the sky. While walking on Prince's Gardens I saw this lovely street Ennismore Gardens Mews. The whole street is lined with plants, roses and little seats. Two old women were taking care of the plants in front of their houses and I decided to walk into the street. One of the old ladies said "Hi" so I replied and all of a sudden we were talking about the weather and where I came from.

After five minutes I continued walking along this beautiful street. The houses are brightly painted to give the whole street that extra special feel. It is unbelievable, but this street is smack in the middle of London but walking through the street it felt like being somewhere completely different.

Off The Beaten Path: Winchester Palace
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Close to the Golden Hinde and behind the Clink Prison Museum you can find the remains of the bishops' Grand Palace. Not much is left of this once grand palace though. You can still see some parts of the flooring and a 14th century rose window carving high above you in the wall of what used to be the Great Hall.

  • Right next to the City Hall I saw this exhibition in September of 2004. Take some time for looking around at iWitness, a unique open air exhibition with work of photographer Tom Stoddart. He says that it is a shame that such pictures excist. The pictures in the exhibition commemorate 40 years of work by the Disasters Emergency Committee. The pictures are arranged in groups: famine, siege, exodus, cleansing, floods, earthquake, loss, conflict and scourge, and include work from Sarajevo, Africa, New York after 9/11, Kosovo and elsewhere.

Not sure if this exhibition is still there. I wasn't able to check it out during my last visit in July 2005. The internet site was down last time I checked, but I'll keep the link here anyway in case it goes up again.

Off The Beaten Path: Earth from the Air
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Well the iWitness exhibition that you could read about in the previous tip is no more. It is replaced now by another art exhibition called Eart from the Air. A stunning compilation of beautiful photo's taken by Yann Arthus Bertrand. Take a look at the pics that will give you some idea of what it's like. The exhibition is on tour. So if it's not next to the City Hall of London anymore take a look at the site of Earth from the Air to see where it has moved to next.
