The world's biggest open air museum?

by martin_nl - last update: Oct 17, 2006

....definitely and without a doubt!

Colosseum by night
Going to Rome has for a long time been a dream. Somehow I didn't make it to Rome until May 2003. I went with Kim, a very good friend. Being both culture freaks we wanted to see every little thing Rome has to offer. But Rome has so much to offer it is impossible to fit it all into a mere 4 days. Although I do think we covered a lot of the city.

The city of Churches and Antiquities

Walking around in Rome you'll discover one thing after the other. Around every corner you wonder what that beautiful building might be and how would that church be from the inside? An interesting fact is that Rome has even more churches than there are days in a year!! So when visiting churches don't stay too long, unless the interior is really marvelous or you'll get church-sick!

Besides being the city of Catholics it is also Ancient Rome that attracts many visitors to this city. It is like the civilised world as we know it today started here. The best examples of this have to be the Colosseum, Palatine and of course without a doubt the Roman Forum. These should be 'the' three must sees on any visitors' itinerary in my opinion that is though ;-)

Planning your days

Okay so my plan was to show you how I planned my 4 days. However it's been a bit too long ago now, so I just can't remember. My ultimate tip would be to buy a good travel guide, preferebaly a Lonely Planet and/or a DK Eyewitness Travel Guide. These guides will give you a good multiple day plan. Also they include some walking tours or give you a path to follow in between buildings in each section of the city. The eyewitness guide is especially good at this!!

And of course make a little list of things you want to see for sure. But remeber, don't just focus on your list, make sure to keep your eyes open at all times and do wonder off a bit of the given walking tour/path, since there is something to see around every corner. Oh and do have a quick peek into every church. It's free and who knows how beautiful it is inside!

Pros:"Rome is like wandering through the biggest open air museum in the world!!!!"
Cons:"At some tourist spots, just too many tourists. But who can blame them. Rome has so much beauty!"
In A Nutshell:"If you like to take a look at lots of old stones, Rome is just the place for you ;-)"

That picture of the Coliseum at night looks amazing. Did you fit everything into 4 days easily? I am thinking of Rome as a possible destination for a trip soon. :-)
