A couple of days in Singapore

by martin_nl - last update: Oct 17, 2006

At the Singapore Art Museum
Singapore was my first experience of Asia. I got here after having spend 9 months in Australia and New Zealand. When I got off the plane it did feel different. Maybe it was a different sort of scent in the air, but it felt good. Went through immigration and then on my way to the hostel since it was late already. It was quite a trek to the hostel but it was a good place.
Skyscrapers in the CBD
On my first day in Singapore I met up with a couple of VT locals. See the travelogue for that meeting. I explored town a little bit, but I mostly browsed the shopping malls, since it was a bit too hot outside for my likings. Next day I met up with Andy again and he showed me around town a bit. We had breakfast at a hawker centre somewhere at the edge of town. A place where you will not find any tourists. We went to a library and on the way we alo tried some durian. Very disgusting I have to say, but I tried at least. Afterwards he took me to Little India for a look around there and also to CBD. In the evening we then had some Italian on Orchard Road and the plan was to see a movie. However all movies were sold out, unless we wanted to go in the middle of the night.

Next day I went to the Botanic Gardens and the National Orchid Garden for a look at the beautiful orchids. One of my flip flops broke, so I had to buy new ones, very annoying! In the evening I met up with Andy again and we went to the Night Zoo. Very cool to see the animals actually move, because during the day, most of the animals are asleep.

After a sleep-in it was already time to move on to the next destination. I took the bus accross the Causeway Bridge into Malaysia, where my flight would leave from Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah on the island of Borneo.
