"Qikitarjuaq - "Big Island"" Broughton Island by arcticboy

Broughton Island Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 12 photos

Broughton Island is Qiqitarjuaq in Inuktitut

I spent a few months during the summer of 2002 working in Qiqitarjuaq. I was wonrking for the Canadian Wildlife Service though the Nunavut Research Institute. The job was interesting, I spent half of almost every day on the water collecting sea water samples along the coast and half in a lab testing the samples. It was busy work, but the wildlife around the island was worth the effort. During our 3 month stay we had a total of 71 polar bear sitings, we had seen bowhead whales breaching a few times and we got fresh air almost every day.

Can't imagine what a few months on Broughton Island must be like! Didn't manage to see any polar bears (luckily!) or whales...just a couple of seals from a distance. An interesting island though :@P
