Of Gods and Dogs

Broken, but not destroyed

I spent 2 weeks visiting Greecei n May 2000, it was my first trip out of the US as well as completely on my own. 4 of those days were spent in Athens the others on Crete and Santorini. One thing that struck me as odd was the presence of so many stray dogs. They were at every ancient site, the beaches, many cafes and even hanging out at the airport. One of my favorite pictures is of myself and a Dalmatian standing in front of the Porch Maidens on the Acropolis

I highly recommend that you stay in Plaka when visiting Athens. From there you are in easy walking distance of nearly everything.
.
Alone at the Acropolis
I started each morning with a walk through the narrow residential streets that lead to the Acropolis where I would sit and enjoy a Nescafe meghalia while I plotted the day?s actions. There is something about being in the presence of the Acropolis that I find absolutely overwhelming. The grandeur of the Parthenon propped against a bright blue cloudless sky is a sight that I will never forget.

After visiting Crete and Santorini I had the opportunity to visit the Acropolis one last time. My ferry had arrived very early in the morning and I was the only person around. I sat on the slippery rocks at the base (Aero Pagus) and looked out at the now densely populated lands where one of the world's earliest civilizations was born. I cried a few tears that morning wondering if I would ever return to this place again. At that very moment the first clouds of my entire holiday rolled in and a gentle rain began to fall on me. Some say it was coincidence, but I like to believe it was the Goddess Athena crying along with me..it makes for a better story!
.

A Second Look:

I never expected to find myself back in Athens but I happily touched down again for 4 days in 2003. It was strange how I remembered the streets and found my way around as if I had just been there.

Porn in Plaka ?

Ivan tells me she is an "actress." She seemed nice enough. :-)

What a wonderful, enthusiastic, positive few pages on Athens. I had the same reaction (tears) when I visited the Acropolis. Compliments are in order for such a fine job.
