On First Glance

The Burg as seen from the Belfort
April 2002

Whether or not the locals appreciate the nickname Venice of the North, I have no idea. I do know that anyone who shares my love of water will be fascinated by this beautiful town. I was captivated by its medevil past, its canals and its sumptuous buildings. It is impossible not to stop at its nerve center, the Burg, home to the Basilica of the Holy Blood (whether you are a believe or not), and the lovely Stadhuis-a 13th century building. One can easily walk about the entire city in a better part of the day and I highly recommend that you do so, taking care to stop and admire the oldest bridges as well as the four remaining gates. Or if your prefer, combine your walking tour with a respectable pub crawl begining in the Markt, an expansive town square busy with tourists and horse drawn carriages. The Belfort looms above the Markt and provides a breathtaking view of the countryside. I can not say enough wonderful things about this town. I am looking forward to a return visit.

Many Happy Returns of the Day

October 2004
Each time I leave a city or town, I wonder if will ever return. When I left Brugge I knew for certain that I would return but also that I wanted to introduce this town to someone who might not otherwise have known of her character (enter Luis)

Some people may not consider Paris to be "in the vicinty" of Brugge, but when you travel as far as we did, a three hour train trip to this lovely little town was a piece of cake..or, in this case should I say a piece of chocolate?

Delighted

Moments after walking from the train station to the Markt, Luis declared "We must come back again when we have more time."

Gladly.
