Who's Buried in Grant's Tomb? - New York City
Who's Buried in Grant's Tomb? Grant's Tomb Review

Following a rapid but successful military career and a failed faming attempt, Ulysses S. Grant once again proved his military adeptness.

The1866 Congress awarded Grant his fourth star making him the first full General of the Armies.

Following his military service he was elected as President of the United States, from 1869 to 1877. One of his great accomplishments include establishing the first national park, Yellowstone, on March 1, 1872.

After the Presidency, he settled in New York City but died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, New York. NYC was one of a number of his choices for burial. Following an architural competition, he was was laid to rest in New York City.

Central Park Elegance - New York City
Central Park Elegance Central Park Review

The Tavern on the Green is part of Central Park history. The elegance surrounding it is out of another century. You really want to be delivered in a horse drawn cart, not a taxi.

Battery Park - New York City
Battery Park Battery Park Review

A fort was built in Battery Park (1808-1811) just before the war of 1812. It was named Castle Clinton in 1817 after DeWitt Clinton then the Mayor of NYC.

The army left the site and for years, the area became an entertainment center, an opera house, and an immigration landing depot.

It even housed the NYC Aquarium for a time until it closed in 1941.

Today Battery park is one of the docks for catching a ferry to Ellis and Liberty Islands.

The "ball" that formerly stood in the middle of the World Trade Center has been reconstructed at the entrance to the park as a permanent memorial to those who died in the distruction of the towers.

Address: Lower Manhattan

Directions: Take the 4 or 5 to Bowling Green Station or the N/R to South Ferry Station.

A walk in the Park - New York City
A walk in the Park Central Park Review

There's just something magical about walking though a park in the fall. But after seeing so many movies filmed in Central Park and hearing some of the "horror stories" about walking through the park (at night), I found it a wonderful experience.

Created around 1859, 843 acres of "green" in the middle of the "asphalt jungle" of NYC. Central park has a bit of everything.

There's so much to do, that one day will cover only a small portion. I'm thinking maybe a week might be closer to what is needed.

Address: between 59th and 110th

Directions: 51 blocks between 59th and 110th

Statue of Liberty - New York City
Statue of Liberty Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Review

Considering the relationship the US and France have had for many years, it is somewhat interesting that one of the most recoginzed "icons" of the US was a present from the French.

Perhaps we should reflect on "those times" and learn from our history.

This was my first trip to see "The Lady" and I think I need another week or so to get better photos.

In 34 degree weather, the boats were crowded....I can't imaging what they are like in "good weather."

Address: Ellis Island

Directions: Battery Park - Take the #5 train (or 6 or 1); walk through the park to the ferry.
