Sailing down the coast of Turkey, the first stop was Kusadasi. Kusadasi means "Bird Island" and the town gets its name from the little island in the harbor.

Because of the marina and relatively large harbor, Kusadasi is a favorite port for tour ships. As a result the "downtown area has many good stores and ample opportunities abound for shoppers.

As in most (all?) other Turkish cities the ritual visit to a rug shop is a must for the tourist on a hunt for the perfect rug.

Bargans can be found, but you need to know the various qualities of the rugs. In general the more knots, the higher the price; Wool on Wool will be more expensive than a Cotton blend and Silk will cost your first born, both arms and possibly a leg or two....But they are beautiful...

Of course, Kusadasi is also the starting place for a trip to Ephesus which is only about 18 Km from the port. Ephesus is one of the finest examples of restoration of the ancient ruins and is a must see event.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Great food; wonderful historical landscape; fun people
Cons:The heat in summer.

Hi the old townof Kusadasi was fabulous - but thankfully I bought a wonderfully lovely Turkish rug when back home in Sydney for prob half the price of what itd been in Turkey!
