Little Paris - Montreal

Only 5 hours' drive from Boston, yet the city is as far away as can be. Granted, Boston has probably the most European feel for any American city. But Montreal... feels almost as if you're walking in the Old World. This is particularly true for Vieux Montreal, from la cathedrale Notre-Dame to the narrow alleyways between tall, stately brick buildings. Of course, that the French language is everywhere has a lot to do with it :) One other thing I do notice: everyone here looks as if they're on SlimFast(TM). I noticed the same thing in France; maybe it's something about the Gallic physical makeup.

There are reminders that this is a North American city, however. For one thing, European French don't show as much interest in ice hockey. Montrealers are rabid about "les habitants", who play at the Molson Center in downtown Montreal. I'm still in grief ever since they eliminated the Boston Bruins from the playoffs this year.

If you can, visit Montreal during the Jazz Festival in July. While music is the main focus, we greatly enjoyed the sightseeing and shopping. Thanks to a strong American dollar, our budget seemed to be able to go further here. We've heard, but haven't yet verified, that Montreal is also spectacular in the winter. This is a city with many charms that leaves many a lasting impression.
