Speaking Bostonian: Say what?

  • The Bostonian accent is either wickedly incomprehensible or wickedly funny, depending on your perspective. Here's a snippet of conversation my friend told me about:

Friend: How do I get to Harvard Yard?
Boston bloke: Hahvid Yahd? Study real hahd. *guffaws*

The Beantown Faux Pas: Baked beans and fried dough

  • You may think it's clever to call Boston by its nickname, "Beantown". The name probably came from one of the popular local favorite, baked beans, back in colonial days. Nowadays, noone around here calls Boston that any more, and the locals are liable to get upset if you do. "Hub", as in "hub of the universe", is an acceptable alternative.

While baked beans aren't hawked on the streets any more, fried dough can be found many places, along with my guilty favorite, Italian sausage.

Hi Din, I like your page. One correction however. Paul Revere's house is not the oldest house in Boston. The James Blake House in Dorchester is: http://www.dorchesteratheneum.org/page.php?id=221 Regards, Cole K
