Da Nang is one of the principal towns on the central coast of Vietnam. The city itself isn't terribly interesting, being mostly modern and commercial. However, due to its central location and transportation hub, it's an ideal starting point for your tour of central Vietnam. The closest attraction is the Marble Mountains just outside of Da Nang. Popular Hoi An is some distance to the South, while the Cham ruins is further away.
Da Nang has an interesting museum of Cham culture. There are also many good beaches here.
China Beach. On one of these beaches the US Marines first landed in Vietnam in March, 1965.
