Ho Chi Minh City Things to Do

Reunification Palace: Reunification (formerly Independence) Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The former residence of South Vietnam's (former) presidents. It was first breached in 1963 during the coup d'etat in which Ngo Dinh Diem was overthrown and assassinated. It was taken over for good when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates in 1975. It's now a museum, with many of its exhibits kept intact in their pre-1975 state. Oh, and they repaired the gates.

Directions: In a gated compound, down the street from the Notre Dame Cathedral.

    Opera House: The Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built by the French, this building sat unused for a long time after the war. It's renovated and, I believe, actively hosts performances. Don't expect the Barber of Seville, though. Vietnamese really don't have Western-style operas.

    City Hall: City Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of Saigon's more ornate facades that dates back to the French colonial era. The park in front has a statue of Ho Chi Minh reading a book to a child sitting in his lap. Off to the left is the Rex Hotel. To the right is the Opera House. This building, however, is dwarfed by the HSBC building in the background.

Notre Dame Cathedral: Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • While a predominantly Buddhist country, Vietnam has a sizeable Catholic population. This is one of the country's most well-known Catholic landmarks.

Ben Thanh market: Ben Thanh market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ho Chi Minh City Ben Thanh market

  • The tower surmounting this market building is the symbol for Saigon. Inside vendors peddle everything you'd ever want to buy. And a lot of things you'd probably not want to buy.

    Rex Hotel: The Rex Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Arguably the most famous Rex Hotel in the world, thanks to its association with American servicemen during the war. You can stay here too if you're willing to shell out. It's scheduled to undergo a multimillion-dollar transformation into a 5-star hotel, so hurry before it gets too expensive.

Faces of the city: Diamond Plaza
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not exactly a classic Saigon landmark, but it's a favorite with expats. Inside is a mall that's indistinguishable from an American mall, until you look closely at the products on the shelves. Upstairs is a KFC and a bowling alley, and on the top floor is a movie theater. Probably too expensive for the average Saigon native, it's still cheap by foreign standards.

    Temples: Vinh Nghiem temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Saigon has many Buddhist temples. These aren't just tourist attractions; the locals actively worship there weekly and on holidays. Buddhist temples are remarkable for their openness; anyone can enter as long as you observe the customs, such as taking off your shoes at the door and refraining from taking flash pictures during ceremonies! There are donation boxes for the faithful, which you may or may not contribute to. Many temples are several stories high, reaching toward the heavens.

    Temples: Xa Loi Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is in a more remote corner of Saigon. The temple complex is huge, enclosed by a park. This tower is octagonal in shape and has 7 floors, each smaller than the one below and contains a Buddha statue in the center.

    Post Office: Post Office building
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • You may need to come here to mail those postcards. It's across from Notre Dame cathedral.

Nice page of an interesting place! I liked the temples in the photos. They look very specific and not usual to the most of the world. Unique;-) Best wishes.
