It is the trade center of an important sugar-producing area that also grows rice, rubber, coffee, and tobacco. Industries in the municipality include sugar, rice, and textile milling, tobacco processing, sawmilling, and metalworking. The ruins of Hindu temples are nearby. Kediri was the capital of a Hindu kingdom from the 11th to the 13th century and was capital of Kediri Residency under Dutch rule.
