Before Hurricane Isabel ...

On a beautiful day in August ... hot & hazy we took a day trip to Annapolis. One of my favorite places when we visit the kids in Maryland. This time we walked from one end of Main Street down the other side. Stopped for lunch and stopped for ice cream. Otherwise, it was a "Shop 'til We Drop" kind of day! Wonderful time!!

Annapolis is twenty-seven miles from both Washington, D.C. and Baltimore City. The City is located on the Severn River and the United States Naval Academy is located on its northeastern border. Its western border is Route 50/301 and its southern border runs down the Annapolis Neck Peninsula area just south of Forest Drive. Annapolis is the Capital of the State of Maryland.

Annapolis is celebrated as a historical location

Site of the nation's first State House.

The original settlement in this area was on Greenbury Point, now mostly submerged by the Severn River. It was called Providence and was established by Puritans seeking religious freedom in 1649. The remainder of the century saw waterfront development on the banks of the creeks in the present City Dock area, and in 1694, Governor Sir Francis Nicholson redesigned a new Capital City for the Province of Maryland to replace the original seat of government in St. Mary's City. Named to honor the future Queen Anne of England, Annapolis literally translates to "Anne's City." All of this early town is within the designated National Historic Landmark area.

City Dock

Do you have a beautiful Yacht to show off? This is the place to do it. It's a narrow channel that sometimes contain a parade of yachts entering, turning around and then sailing away. Yup, that's a really nice yacht coming into the City Dock now!

Pros and Cons

Rather than the author of "Kunta Kinte" (the main character) Alex Haley is the author of "Roots"
