Off The Beaten Path: Okay, I know this is a...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Okay, I know this is a restaurant and it's in East Boston ... which is just outside of Winthrop across from the Suffolk Downs 'T' station 1233 Bennington St, (617) 567-4454. It's also on one of the landing routes for the incoming airplanes over Revere, Boston and Winthrop.

But I also LOVE their pizza!!

And it is also right next to the entrance to Winthrop's Belle Isle Park... Take a look in my travelogues for Belle Isle Marshlands.

  • Next the Jimmy Magg's on Bennington Street, East Boston is the entrance to the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation.
    .
Belle Isle Marsh Reservation preserves 152 acres of the 241- acre Belle Isle Marsh, Boston's last remaining salt marsh. A unique place to explore, the reservation exemplifies the type of wetlands that once lined the Massachusetts Bay shore. Its protected waters are nurseries to fish and shellfish and are critical habitat to many saltmarsh plants and wildlife rare to the metropolitan area. There is 28 acres of landscaped park with pathways, benches and an observation tower. The marsh also borders Winthrop and Revere.
    .
Open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset. Free.
    .
By MBTA, take the Blue Line to Suffolk Downs.

Off The Beaten Path: Front or Backyard Gardens abound.....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Okay ... this might not be an acitivity for all, BUT I love to walk about town and view the gardens. Either in the front, side or back yards, as well as on the porches to greet a visitor. People put so much work into them and the Summer is too short not to walk about and enjoy them.

We don't have a big garden but only a back porch, so Bill planted a packet of wildflowers we got in the mail as a gift and this is what we got:

This picture is of a Nicotiana Flowering Tobacco. Yup, an ornamental tobacco plant. (Which I thought was funny because I use to work for the American Lung Association). Found out what it was called from a website called Birds & Bloom. Actually, some nice people on their "Bulletin Board" answered my questions about this plant. The smell is intoxicating! We plan to plant more for next year to fill the air on our back porch again.

I tried to get to here, but ran out of time last year. It looks like a great place to see the sites and the sea. Thank you for the tour.

Beautiful page on Winthrop! Funny enough, I actually have been to Winthrop, Wasthington which too is a pretty unknown place! I was in Boston area once a few years ago and I truly adored it. I'd love to visit again!
