  • Oak Bluffs offers a super selection of things to do to keep the whole family happy during their stay. There are public beaches where you can relax and swim in the beautiful waters of Vineyard Sound; charters for those who love to fish; bikes and mopeds for those who want to get out and see the Island; and spas and fitness for those who want to relax and recharge. Then, when your day is through, find a nightlife listing for the best places after dark on Martha’s Vineyard.

We weren't there over night and it was only one day, but I can give you a tour of what we saw for the day. It was cloudy and windy, but still a nice day!

Things To Do: The Gingerbread Houses
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the turn of the century, Oak Bluffs was the summer destination place for thousands of vacationers. Originally known as Cottage City, this charming Victorian seaside community bustled with activity then, as it does now

The Methodist Campground area, established as a religious summer retreat in 1835, provided a unique experience for visitors for many years. Hundreds of imaginative and colorful gingerbread cottages, decorated with flowery window boxes and enhanced by elegant porches, were everywhere and have become a focal point of a visit to Oak Bluffs.

  • Built in 1876, the oldest operating platform carousel in the country is registered as a National Historical Landmark. There are twenty-two wooden horses with real horse hair—and of course, a brass ring to catch.

The carousel is open from Easter Saturday through Columbus Day (schedule varies). Rides are only $1.00, and if you are lucky enough to catch the brass ring, you get a free ride! In addition to the carousel, video games are available as well as refreshments, including popcorn, cotton candy, slush, and soft drinks.

Things To Do: Civil War Memorial Statue
  • Tip Rating:
  • The statue was a gift of Charles Strahan, who served in the Confederate Army and was editor of the now-defunct Martha's Vineyard Herald, which was printed in Oak Bluffs. In 1980, the town re-painted the statue. -- The statue clearly is of a Union soldier; U.S. is stamped on his kit.

  • A Showplace seven-acre park. The annual fireworks and summer band concerts are held here. The houses surrounding the park reflect the more affluent families in their size and style — Queen Anne and Gothic Revival.

Missed the Illuminations this year. sigh. Just can't be everywhere all at the same time. Late season shopping trip looks like a fun idea.
