Edinburgh City Centre
Free Edinburgh tour!
Start in Charlotte Square and take in the new town {18th cen} take in the north side walk north west and look at why this is a heritage site, turn right to Anslie Place turn right to- Moray Place is a must see, return to Anslie Pl. Randolph Cres turn right past the French Consul and take in the Dean Bridge, cross the road {Take care} down the hill Bell's Brae to Dean Village from here you can walk to Leith around 3 miles or Balerno around 7 miles and only 5 minutes to the west end.
Return to the square and head east along George Street window shop or the lane to the right "Rose street" with shops and pubs. {You could try and have a drink in each one to the end} pedestrian street.
St Andrews Square walk passed the north side and how it all looked 200 years ago, on the east side is a equestrian statue behind this is the Royal Bank of Scotland, go in and have a look inside {Yes it's worth it} go forward to the main banking hall and look up at the dome. When you leave the bank turn left{Don't go to the square} turn left again at the side of the bank and through the gates. Ahead on the corner sits the Cafe Royal eat like a King in the Oyster bar or up to the lounge for a cheap but good lunch for £4.50p (nearby is a good fry-up cheap & filling served by aussie staff). Ok go into one of my favourite pubs The Cafe Royal look at the walls take in the bar walk right through to the other door and leave.
{Or try a pint}
Turn right and on to Princes Street. Wellington's equestrian statue sits in front of another building worth looking inside Register House {and where to find your ancestors}
Turn left into Waterloo Place look up at Nelson's Monument, cross the road and turn right into the cemetery here you will find a statue of President Lincoln and the tall needle is in memory of Scots martyrs sent to Australia. Take in the view and return to Wellington turn left into North Bridge looking left and right take photos of Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle. Ahead on the right is the "Scotsman Building" a hotel now! But once the Scotsman newspaper H.Q. a nice looking building.
At the lights you are now on the Royal Mile left takes you to the Children's Museum it's great and it's free! And far better than our twin city of Munich. The city museum and Palace. Please look at Horse Wynd {bottom of the mile on the left in a "CLOSE"}
Return to the lights go into the church like building the TRON. Here pick up leaflets info as you are in the Old Town Information Centre and wonder at the old street beneath you [Marlyn's Wynd] don't forget to take in the windows too.
Ok near the end of the tour and you have spent nothing. Turn left up towards the Castle before you get to St Giles Cathedral on the left is the Police Museum. On the right is the City Chambers with beneath {Under the street Marys Kings Close costs money sorry! but go there}
Ok into St Giles take in the Thistle Chapel. Behind St Giles our law courts High Court and old Parliament go in and see the people wearing wigs, Stain glass window and the Hammer Beam Ceiling.
On the corner of the street learn about Scotland's Parliament. Turn left then right into Victoria Street which has quaint shops down to the Grass Market where you will find lots of pubs cross keep left up the hill to see the statue of Greyfriars Bobbie. Greyfriars Churchyard back to Greyfriars Bobbie cross the street and into the Scottish museum [which is free] to the roof for the view. Ok feet hurt need food and you have a days money unspent, you can treat yourself in the restaurant, dear yes but you have not spent any money today and you may meet film stars. And you have the Museum to see. Oh go on treat yourself.
Floodlit Edinburgh Castle

The Castle is the heart of the city.

The top attraction is Edinburgh Castle.
Recent Bronze-Age finds confirm a 2nd-century settlement on Castle Hill.
The only structure to predate the 15th century is the 12th-century St Margaret's Chapel.
Honours of Scotland
Unlike the Crown Jewels of England, Scotland's were saved from the clutches of Oliver Cromwell.
The regalia is displayed in the Crown Room.
Sword of State
Domenico da Sutri made the sword, with its scabbard and belt, for Pope Julius II, who presented it to James IV in 1507. They are exquisite examples of Italian Renaissance craftsmanship.
Crown
James V commissioned Edinburgh goldsmith John Mosman to produce a more impressive crown for him to wear at the coronation of his second consort, Mary of Guise, in 1540.
Sceptre
Around 1494, Pope Alexander VI presented James IV with the silver gilt sceptre.
Scottish National war Memorial
At the end of World War I {1914-18} it was decided to honour Scots who had lost their lives in the conflict. Commissioned and built in 1923 by Robert Lorimer.
Mons Meg
In 1459, Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, presented his nephew James II with two bombards, the largest siege guns ever made. One of them, known as Mons Meg {its was made in Belgium}

EDINBURGH CASTLE

An ancient monument, Edinburgh Castle was built as a royal residence that could be defended from attack.
Its not only Scotland's most popular tourist attraction, but also its national symbol.
Castle Rock, the great mound of basalt is an extinct volcano on which Edinburgh Castle stands.
The castle overlooks the Grassmarket to its south and Princes Street with its gardens to its north.
The Scottish United Services Museum: Royal Scottish Dragoon Guards Museum; Queen Anne Building, Palace and Great Hall can all be visited within its walls.
The One O'Clock Gun Fires each day [except sundays] at One O' Clock.

 I loved the photo of the Spitfire with the bridge behind it. To me, a remarkable photo. It had to be taken from an airplane or possibly totally constructed from a photo and a model. Hints?
